MSU Extension partners with the Molina Foundation to give away 30,000 books

With a goal of improving childhood literacy in the Great Lakes state, Michigan State University (MSU) Extension has partnered with the Molina Foundation to give away 30,000 children’s books. The books, valued at more than $220,000, will be distributed to Michigan youth through MSU Extension or MSU Extension partner programs this summer as a way to combat “the summer slide.”

4-H Capitol Experience leaves lasting impression on teenage participants

More than 80 teens from across the state experienced and explored various aspects of policy, civic engagement and leadership at the annual 4-H Capitol Experience, March 22-25. High school students gathered in Lansing on Sunday to begin learning from and interacting with state senators and representatives, chaperones and other youth participants.

Environmental Education “On the Road Show” Workshop

Michigan State University Extension is offering a workshop to enhance adults’ ability to work with youth in the area of environmental education. This program will provide training and content in environmental and outdoor education to 4-H staff members, K-12 teachers, youth and teen leaders for use in their local clubs, schools and communities.

Michigan 4-H expands 4-H Tech Wizards mentoring program

With support from the National 4-H Council, Michigan State University (MSU) Extension will be expanding its successful Michigan 4-H Tech Wizards program to five new communities this year. This expansion will bring the opportunity to spend time with caring adult role models to hundreds of youth in underserved regions of the state as they work alongside their mentors to explore science and technology while developing important life skills.

Become a Project FISH Instructor at ANR Week

Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) Week, March 7-14 at Michigan State University (MSU), will offer a workshop to train those interested in becoming Project FISH (Friends Involved in Sportfishing Heritage) instructors.  Training sessions will be available March 10 and 11 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in room 152 of the Natural Resources Building.  

Michigan 4-H expands statewide recruitment campaign

With a goal of expanding its reach to 20 percent of the state’s youth population by the year 2020, Michigan State University (MSU) Extension has launched phase two of a statewide 4-H recruitment campaign. Utilizing multiple advertising channels and supported by local county efforts, the campaign hopes to reach thousands of caring adult volunteers and new potential 4-H’ers.

MSU Distinguished Academic Staff Award given to Lisa Bottomley

Lisa Bottomley is the recipient of the Michigan State University (MSU) Distinguished Academic Staff Award, presented Feb. 10 at the president’s State of the University Address and the Awards Convocation at the Wharton Center. The Distinguished Academic Staff Award recognizes the significant accomplishments and notable efforts of exceptional professionals at MSU. Bottomley is an MSU Extension specialist for the Children and Youth Institute.  

Wayne County 4-H’ers awarded $5,000 in 4-H Ag Innovators Experience Video Challenge

Two members of the Vista Maria Giving Hope 4-H club, Gary Payne and Corbin Nelson, were awarded a $5,000 cash prize for their 90-second video in the 4-H Ag Innovators Experience Video Challenge. This contest was part of the 4-H Ag Innovators Experience, presented by National 4-H Council and Monsanto, which aims to bring workforce skills to life through hands-on activities.
