4-H Exploration Days
Location: Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI
Annual MSU pre-college program that attracts approximately 2500 youth participants and chaperones representing all 83 Michigan counties.
4-H Great Lakes and Natural Resources Camp
Location: Camp Chickagami, Presque Isle County, MI
MSU pre-college program teaches youth about Michigan’s diverse natural resources, Great Lakes ecosystems and outdoor recreation opportunities such as charter fishing, kayaking, sailing and snorkeling.
Project F.I.S.H.
Project F.I.S.H. (Friends Involved in Sportfishing Heritage) involves youth in a long-term and continuous, community supported, sportfishing and aquatic resource education program.
The Vision:
To initiate and provide fishing education and fishing skills to interested adults and youth from Michigan’s many diverse populations. This will preserve a natural heritage that ensures the future of fishing, which includes natural resources and environmental awareness, ethical fishing practices, fisheries stewardship, and positive developmental activities for children, families, and the community.
The Michigan Project F.I.S.H. program will work through a statewide committee with representatives from: Michigan 4-H Youth Programs, Michigan State University Dept. of Community, Agriculture, Recreation and Resource Studies (CARRS), Michigan Dept. of Natural Resources Fisheries Division, Michigan United Conservation Clubs, recreation departments, service organizations, sportfishing industries/retailers, volunteers, and many others.
Project Goals:
- Provide multiple experience sportfishing giving youth gradual, sportfishing mentoring and a lifelong learning process.
- Develop in kids an appreciation of the outdoors and outdoor ethics and behaviors.Encourage kids to spend time outdoors.
- Introduce youth to sportfishing as a hobby and lifetime pursuit.
- Reach youth through clubs, schools, and sportsmen’s organizations.
- Help adults as mentors spend time with youth.
- Involve teachers, adult volunteer youth leaders, teen leaders, and retirees as mentors.
- Provide training for volunteers, with volunteers attending as members of a local team.
- Help instructors develop willingness and ability to start and sustain a long term program in their local communities (including management/coordinator strategies)
- Help instructors and youth gain new knowledge and confidence, enjoyment of the outdoors, aquatic biology/ecology, ethics and angling skills.
- Show local teams of instructors how to use available resources that highlight accessible fishing opportunities.

7th annual 4-H Day at the Breslin celebrates youth development and Spartan Women’s Basketball
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State University Extension (MSUE) 4-H Youth Development will cheer on the MSU women’s basketball team as they take on Ohio State during their Jan. 15 home game at the MSU Breslin Center. “MSUE 4-H Day at the Breslin” is a celebration of the MSUE 4-H program in Michigan.
At last – someone’s taking responsibility!
4-H’s new program, "Join the Revolution of Responsibility," puts a spotlight on all those making a difference in their communities, watching over our natural resources and creating new businesses. It isn’t just politicians or public officials on the front lines of tackling these issues—it’s 4-H members throughout Michigan.
Workshop reels teachers in to get kids hooked on fishing
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Teach a teacher to fish and they’ll teach a kid a skill for life. Michigan State University’s (MSU’s) Project FISH (Friends Involved in Sportfishing Heritage) program is working with the Future Fisherman Foundation to present a two-day workshop devoted to sportfishing and aquatic resources education. The program, slated for Sept. 27-28 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the MSU Extension Kalamazoo Office, targets teachers and volunteers, and 4-H program leaders and other MSU Extension educators.
Michigan 4-H invites community to an evening in the garden
Michigan 4-H Youth Development will host its first 4-H Evening in the Garden event, Tuesday, Aug. 16, as a recruitment opportunity, a chance for current 4-H’ers to showcase their projects and an occasion to present activities for hands-on participation.
4-H Participants prepare to present environmental research to State Senate Committee
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Twenty-five members of the Michigan 4-H Youth Conservation Council (M4HYCC) are finalizing their research on Michigan wetland conservation to make their way to the state Capitol, April 28.
